Dental Veneers

What Are Dental Veneers

Dental veneers refer to a thin ceramic shell or layer that is placed over the surface of a tooth. They are made of different materials that are used for cosmetic purposes as well as a protective layer of the damaged tooth. They are used to help an individual have better-looking teeth and a more beautiful smile.

Who needs Dental Veneers?

Veneers are commonly used on people who have:
  • Discolored teeth-- either because of root canal treatment; stains from medication, excessive fluoride or other causes

  • Damaged and worn out teeth

  • Fractured or chipped teeth

  • Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth

  • Gaps between the teeth

The material usually used is about a millimeter in thickness and is typically placed on the surface of a tooth that is still healthy and intact. The tooth does not have to be shaped or filed in a particular way to put on dental veneers. Veneers can be used to lengthen or widen teeth. They also act as a protective layer, since they reduce sensitivity to cold, heat, and sweets.

How Are Dental Veneers Applied?

This procedure requires you to make three trips to the dentist — the first trip for consultation, the second for making the veneers and the third is for applying the veneers. Dental Veneers can be put on one or multiple teeth simultaneously.
During your first appointment, you will have to explain what sort of a result you want to achieve. The dentist will then examine your teeth and determine what type of dental veneers are suitable for you. He or she will then make impressions of your teeth and mouth, and might also take dental X-rays.
On the second appointment, the dentist will prepare your teeth and make veneers for them. Almost 0.5 millimeters of enamel from the surface of your tooth will be removed by your dentist to prepare it for a veneer. Before removing the enamel, the dentist will apply some anesthetic so that the area is insensitive. Then, an imprint of your tooth will be created. The dentist will forward the imprint to the dental lab, where it will be used to make your veneer. The lab will send back the veneer within two to four weeks.
Before permanently fixing the veneer to your tooth, your dentist will confirm if it fits correctly and its color is matching by briefly placing it on your tooth. If they properly fit, the dentist will clean, polish and scratch your tooth to roughen it, so the bonding process is strong. Then using a special cement, the veneer is glued on your tooth, followed by a special light beam, which focuses on the dental veneer to cure it quickly.
